University Studies requires a student to obtain proficiency through the 201-level (equivalent to foreign language 211 at NCCCs) in a language previously studied or the 102-level (equivalent to foreign language 112 at NCCCs) in a second foreign language not previously studied. Students will demonstrate proficiency by completing a course at the 201 level or higher in a language previously studied or at the 102-level in a second foreign language. If you graduated high school 7 or more years before you enrolled at UNCW, an exception applies to you. Then you only need to complete a language course at the 102 level (or higher)
Students are encouraged to build the North Carolina Community College (NCCC) course recommendations below into the associate degree to best prepare for the intended university and major.

The University of North Carolina Wilmington strongly recommends students complete their Associates’ degree prior to transferring to UNCW.
The English Teacher Licensure option prepares students to teach English at the secondary level and to make contributions as active professionals.
-
No more than 12 hours may be at the 200 level.
-
Students must take at least one course from the early survey courses (ENG 211, ENG 223 and ENG 225) - to help with progress to degree, we recommend taking these courses at the CC if available.
-
Students must take at least one course from the later survey courses (ENG 212, ENG 224 and ENG 226). - to help with progress to degree, we recommend taking these courses at the CC if available.
Students planning to pursue licensure should apply to the Watson College of Education as soon as admissions requirements are met (for AA degree transfer students, typically after the first semester at UNCW) and plan their programs in regular consultation with their advisors.
-
To earn teacher licensure in secondary education, 39 hours of education courses in addition to the specialty area are required.
-
Secondary education students pursuing licensure in secondary education (9-12) must complete the Professional Studies Courses for Secondary Education in addition to those of the specialty area.
-
Students in all programs should consult their advisors for admission procedures and for a list of courses requiring Watson College admissions.
-
Once at UNCW, a grade of “C-” or better is required in education courses, as well as all courses in the interdisciplinary specialty and the professional semester. A cumulative grade point average of 2.70 is required for the practicum semester.
