Transfer Admission Requirements

Students who have graduated from high school or obtained a GED or adult high school diploma and enrolled in another postsecondary institution are considered transfer students. UNCW uses a holistic approach to review transfer student applications and will consider several aspects of an application in making an admission decision.

To be competitive for transfer admission, applicants must:

  • Meet UNC system high school minimum course requirements (or be exempt by being 21 years of age or older or having completed 24 hours of transferable undergraduate credits)
  • Have completed or be enrolled in 24 hours of transferable undergraduate credit hours

Transfer applicants are also recommended to have:

  • A minimum 2.4 college GPA or higher
  • Have completed or enrolled in college-level English and/or math

Note: Admission to the University does not guarantee admission to a specific academic program. Some academic programs may require an additional application and have requirements that exceed those listed above.

College Level Foreign Language Requirements:

University Studies requires a student to obtain proficiency through the 201-level (equivalent to foreign language 211 at NCCCs) in a language previously studied or the 102-level (equivalent to foreign language 112 at NCCCs) in a second foreign language not previously studied. Students will demonstrate proficiency by completing a course at the 201 level or higher in a language previously studied or at the 102-level in a second foreign language. If you graduated high school 7 or more years before you enrolled at UNCW, an exception applies to you. Then you only need to complete a language course at the 102 level (or higher).

Additional Information From UNC Wilmington:

The University of North Carolina Wilmington strongly recommends students complete their Associates’ degree prior to transferring to UNCW.

The History Department's faculty members are proud of their partnership with the Watson College of Education in training and preparing the next generation of history and social studies teachers at primary, middle grades, secondary and post-secondary levels.

Future social studies high school teachers complete the 40-hour history major as well as additional coursework in political science, anthropology or sociology, geography and economics.

Students Seeking Licensure in Social Studies: 

Students wishing to pursue teacher preparation programs must be formally admitted to the Watson College of Education and to the Teacher Education Program.

  • Can only count 6 credits from 200 level courses, with no more than 3 credits of HST 291. 
  • Majors are required to complete at least one 200-400 level course treating each of the following areas: 1) Europe, 2) the United States, and, 3) Africa, Asia, Latin America, or the Middle East.
  • No more than 6 hours of HST 491 and HST 498 can be counted toward the major. 
400 Level HST courses 6
  • HST 491 and HST 498 will not count here. 
  • Students completing departmental honors in history may apply 3 hours of HST 499 towards the 400 level seminar requirement.
Collateral Courses for Teacher Licensure 21

History majors seeking licensure in social studies must complete a minimum of 21 hours in three social studies areas other than HST, including the following UNCW courses (with the CC equivalents shown in parenthesis). 

  • PLS 101 (POL 120)
  • At least one ECN course (ECO 151)
  • At least one GGY course (GEO 111, 112, or 130)
  • At least either one ANT course OR one SOC course (ANT 210 OR SOC 210)

We recommend students try to complete as many of the courses listed above as possible, as well as the HIS courses on the guide, at the CC to help with their progression to degree.
