University Studies requires a student to obtain proficiency through the 201-level (equivalent to foreign language 211 at NCCCs) in a language previously studied or the 102-level (equivalent to foreign language 112 at NCCCs) in a second foreign language not previously studied. Students will demonstrate proficiency by completing a course at the 201 level or higher in a language previously studied or at the 102-level in a second foreign language. If you graduated high school 7 or more years before you enrolled at UNCW, an exception applies to you. Then you only need to complete a language course at the 102 level (or higher).
Students are encouraged to build the North Carolina Community College (NCCC) course recommendations below into the associate degree to best prepare for the intended university and major.

The University of North Carolina Wilmington strongly recommends students complete their Associates’ degree prior to transferring to UNCW.
International Studies is an interdisciplinary major that focuses on social transformation and innovative responses to seemingly intractable global problems. International Studies students learn to:
-
Think across disciplines
-
Move between the local and the global
-
Be mindful of the realities of human lives at the center of our investigations
The International Studies major is designed specifically to meet these goals by offering an interdisciplinary bachelor's degree that provides a distinctive international learning experience for UNCW students. The integrative program curriculum will provide students with:
-
A focus on a particular international theme or geographic area of concentration
-
Exposure to other cultures, people, and places
-
An understanding of one's own culture from international perspectives
-
A deeper appreciation of the global society.
International Studies Concentrations:
-
Arts and Literature
-
Globalization
-
Environment
-
Africa
-
Asia
-
Europe
-
Latin America
-
Middle East
We encourage CC students to review the INT concentrations to determine if there are 100 - 200 level courses you could take at the CC that would count for your intended concentration.
Language Requirement for the Major:
Intermediate Mid proficiency (as per ACTFL guidelines) in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish or other approved language demonstrated by either (1) completion of a 202 course in the chosen language or (2) a proficiency evaluation or placement test. For less commonly taught languages, study abroad and Directed Independent Study courses may count in place of 200-level courses. Students are strongly encouraged to align their choice of language and international experience such that they complement each other.
We encourage students to take their language courses at the CC if the language they wish to study is offered there.
