Ideal for future teachers, the Teacher Education Concentration is a track to a B.A. in History that includes the specific history and social science courses recommended for eventual Social Studies teachers in North Carolina. Students take the full array of undergraduate requirements, and gain a strong foundation of historical and social science content. Advanced students can use free electives to begin graduate-level Education classes.
In collaboration with the College of Education, students with a 3.5 GPA may apply some of the credits from their senior year to the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.). The accelerated program takes a student from freshman to the M.A.T. degree in five years. Professional education courses, and the student teaching experience in a high school, are part of the graduate school portion of the program, leading to eligibility for North Carolina certification to teach Social Studies in secondary schools in North Carolina and most other states. Holders of the M.A.T. are more competitive in the teacher job market and often earn a higher salary.
Many of our majors are transfer students, from other universities and community colleges. Our advisors will work with you on credit equivalencies and requirements. In the History major, 18 credit hours (6 courses) of History must be completed at NC State. At least 12 of those hours must be at the 400-level and must include one HI 491 seminar.
Remaining Courses to be Taken at NC State are based on CAA eligibility and completion of all required and suggested courses in this transfer guide. Remaining courses, hours and time to degree may vary for each student. Fulfilling the World Language 201-level requirement prior to transfer will allow students to better balance semster courswork in this major.
