Program Admission Notes:

NC State Undergraduate Admissions employs a holistic approach in reviewing transfer students’ applications and considers a range of accomplishments and qualifications. Recommended courses and GPA are major critical path courses or departmental recommendations and are not minimum requirements for transfer admissions.

  • 3.0 and above GPA
  • English Composition I & II equal to NC State’s ENG 101 (ENG 111 + 112= ENG 101 and ENG 1**)
  • 8 semester hours of calculus equal to NC State’s MA 141 & 241 (minimum grade of B in Calculus coursework)
  • 2.5 GPA in the last two calculus or higher math courses
  • Calculus-based physics equal to NC State’s PY 205 & 206 and PY 208 & PY 209 (PHY 251 and PHY 252 at an NC community College)

Please note that this major is Fall entry only and may take 2.5 or more years to complete after transfer.

Physics provides the conceptual foundation for science and engineering. A physics degree is a mark of major intellectual achievement and a gateway to a thousand careers. The physics major at NC State combines the resources of a major research university with the ambience of a small college. Our ratio of physics majors to faculty of about 3 to 1 allows us to offer small classes, personal attention, and unparalleled opportunities for involvement in research.

Most physics majors are preparing for employment in a government or industrial laboratory, or with a company that provides STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) products or services. Other physics majors are preparing for graduate studies in physics or related sciences, or enrollment in professional schools (such as medicine or law). Some physics majors are preparing for a career as a high school teacher. The Interdisciplinary Physics Concentration at NC State allows students to customize a highly technical Bachelor of Science degree in consultation with an expert Faculty advisor.  The combinations of different scientific fields that can be incorporated into the Interdisciplinary concentration are almost limitless.  Examples include biophysics, geophysics, mathematical physics, and data science.
