Transfer Guide for Associate in Arts

Program Admission Notes:

UNC Asheville does not have a major in Education, but students can take the required classes to be recommended for a North Carolina Professional Educator's Initial License.

Requirements for Informal Admission as a Licensure Candidate For Informal Admission as a Licensure Candidate to the Teacher Education Program, students must complete the following requirements.

  • Be accepted to UNC Asheville as an undergraduate degree-seeking or Post-Baccalaureate Licensure student   
  • Complete at least 30 semester hours of post-secondary education 
  • Enroll in EDUC 210 and EDUC 211
  • During the first course taken in the Department of Education, complete an online Informal Admission Form
  • During the first course taken in the Department of Education, complete an online Memorandum of Understanding regarding the potential effect criminal convictions may have on those seeking licensure
  • Purchase a criminal background check and receive a satisfactory report and departmental clearance before beginning the first field experience

Transfer students typically have a cumulative college GPA of 2.5 or higher. To be considered, you must be eligible to return to the last school you attended.

  • UNC Asheville Transfer Common Application or CFNC Application
  • $75 application fee or a fee waiver
  • Official high school transcript if you have fewer than 24 completed college credits at the time of application AND are 20 years and younger. If you were homeschooled, submit a Home School Eligibility Certification. If you are under 21, ensure you satisfy the UNC-System high school course requirements.
  • Official college transcripts from all post-secondary institutions you’ve attended.

Early College Students should complete the First-Year Student application.

All students are required to complete a college-level foreign language through the second semester, or to place out of the second semester. These courses can be taken at the community college.

Additional Information From UNC Asheville:

UM 124: Global Humanities: Ancient Worlds and HUM 214: Global Humanities: Premodern Worlds (300-1700) at UNC Asheville will automatically be fulfilled by the Associate Degree and UGETC. However, taking HIS 111 and HIS 112 at the community college will provide foundational knowledge to proceed with the upper-level Humanities classes.

Students will be required to complete 60 hours from 4-year institutions. Students must complete 30 hours of 300-400 level courses as part of the required 120 hours.

UNC Asheville does not have a major in Education; students complete the requirements for a specific major and then take the required Education classes to be recommended for licensure.

Areas of Licensure and Required Majors The Department of Education is accredited to recommend candidates for licensure in the following areas.

  • Elementary Education (K–6)
  • Middle School (6–9): Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies
  • Secondary Education (9–12): Biology, Chemistry, Comprehensive Science (Atmospheric Sciences Biology, Chemistry,Environmental Studies, or Physics), Earth Science, English, Latin (Ancient Mediterranean Studies), Mathematics, Physics, Social Studies (Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science, or Sociology)
  • Kindergarten–12 (K­–12): Art, Special Education: General Curriculum, Theatre Arts

Candidates seeking K-12 or 9-12 licensure (except for the area of K-12 Special Education: General Curriculum) must complete the disciplinary major which is congruent with their licensure area. Middle school licensure candidates must complete a major that is appropriate for their chosen licensure area of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science or Social Studies. Candidates seeking licensure in Elementary Education (K-6) or Special Education: General Curriculum may complete a disciplinary major in any area.

Third Level Humanities Course 4

Take one of the following:

  • HUM 324 - The Modern World: Mid-17th to Mid-20th Century

Fourth Level Humanities Capstone Course 4

Take one of the following:

Diversity Intensive Courses 6-8

Take two Diversity Intensive courses--one must be DI-R designated. These courses can be found throughout the curriculum, including courses used for the major. LA 378 fulfills both the DI-R and the Third Level Humanities requirements.

Additional Course Requirements 0-20

Take additional courses to reach 120 hours. Student can consider adding a minor if it can be completed as part of the 120 required hours.
