Program Admission Notes:

NC State Undergraduate Admissions employs a holistic approach in reviewing transfer students’ applications and considers a range of accomplishments and qualifications. Recommended courses and GPA are major critical path courses or departmental recommendations and are not minimum requirements for transfer admissions.

  • 3.0 and above GPA
  • English Composition I & II equal to NC State’s ENG 101 (ENG 111 + 112= ENG 101 and ENG 1**)
  • College-level Math 

The Department of World Languages and Cultures offers concentrations in Arabic Studies, Asian Studies (Chinese, Hindi-Urdu, Japanese), French, German, and Spanish. Please visit the program website for additional information and concentration-specific requirements (post transfer.)

College Level Foreign Language Requirements:

These majors require, at minimum, a world language at the 212-level or higher for graduation. Students are strongly encouraged to complete this language requirement prior to transfer.

  • Language 111 (prerequisite)
  • Language 112 (prerequisite)
  • Language 211 (required for graduation)
  • Language 212 (required for graduation)

Native or heritage speakers of a language other than English may receive a waiver for this requirement after transfer to NC State. Please consult the World Languages placement page for more information.

Please note that all German Studies concentrations require an internship abroad in Germany, Austria or German-Speaking Switzerland. 

Remaining Courses to be Taken at NC State are based on CAA eligibility and completion of all required and suggested courses in this transfer guide. Remaining courses, hours and time to degree may vary for each student. This guide prepares students to transfer with the language skills to begin major requirements while meeting the majority--if not all--college-level requirements in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences.

College of Humanities & Social Sciences Requirements 3-9

World Language and Culture majors require a college core of 33 hours in History, Literature, Social Sciences, Arts & Letters, World Languages and Philosophy. CAA-eligible students following this guide should expect, on average, to take 3-9 hours of these requirements, depending on their major choice.
