College Level Foreign Language Requirements:

This major requires a world language at the 211-level or higher for graduation. Language requirements may be completed after matriculation to NC State or prior to transfer by completing:

  • Language 111 (prerequisite)
  • Language 112 (prerequisite)
  • Language 211 (required for graduation)

Additional Information From NC State University:

The undergraduate major in English is built around a 12-hour core consisting of two literature classes and two courses from the following categories: Film, Linguistics, Creative Writing, and Rhetoric. In addition to the 12-hour core, students take an additional 27 hours of course work in the major.

The Literature (LLT) concentration provides a strong general education with an emphasis on the study of literature through interdisciplinary approaches. Attentive to the roles played by new media, diversity, and globalization, this concentration is also informed by the emerging field of digital humanities. It leads to a broad range of careers in education, business, government, law, etc. The major includes 39 hours of English courses beyond freshman composition, seven courses that satisfy categorical requirements, and two literature electives.

Major Residency Requirement: Minimum of fifteen (15) credit hours of English/Film courses must be completed at NC State.

The English:Literature degree requires a minimum of two courses in pre-1800 literature. Fulfillment should not require additional hours and students may use any listed pre-1800 course  to fulfill other major requirements.
