Transfer Guide for Associate in Fine Arts in Music

2025-2026

Concentration(s): All Majors
Delivery Method: On-Campus

Program Admission Notes:

Students who wish to pursue a degree from the Hayes School of Music must audition before members of the appropriate applied music faculty for acceptance into the program in the semester prior to transferring. Music Industry Studies, Music Therapy, and Music Education have additional audition requirements. All students should refer to the “Prospective Students” tab on the Hayes School of Music website for more information about the audition process.

General Education Completion: It should be noted that completing the AFA does not guarantee general education requirements are met. If students complete general education courses, as listed in this transfer guide, they should have general education requirements met upon transferring to Appalachian.

In compliance with the Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) in Music to Bachelor of Music Articulation Agreement of spring 2019 between the University of North Carolina and the North Carolina Community College System (NCCS) the Hayes School of Music awards transfer credit for all music coursework completed with a grade of C or better for students who have graduated with a GPA of at least 2.0 from a North Carolina Community College AFA in Music program.

Applicants should have a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.25 in all attempted college coursework. For complete transfer admission information and deadlines, please visit https://admissions.appstate.edu/apply/transfer-student

*Students with less than a 2.25 will be reviewed holistically. Please speak to your transfer admissions counselor or call the Transfer Admissions & Engagement office with questions.

Foundations of American Democracy (FAD):

  • FAD is a graduation requirement for all students entering any UNC institution on or after July 1, 2025, who are seeking a baccalaureate degree.
  • Waiver: Students transferring to App State with 60+ college credit hours or an AA or AS degree will have the FAD requirement waived.
  • Alternative Courses: If you plan to transfer to App State without meeting any of the above criteria, you can fulfill the FAD requirement by taking one of these courses at a North Carolina Community College: HIS 131, HIS 132, POL 120, or SOC 220

Early College: Early college students are considered First Year students (not Transfers) and should apply using the Common App.
