Transfer Guide for Associate in Fine Arts in Visual Arts

Program Admission Notes:

General Education Completion: Students following this transfer guide can expect to transfer to Appalachian with their general education requirements met. It should be noted that the AFA itself does not meet gen ed requirements, but rather the courses taken to complete the AFA degree.

Applicants should have a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.25 in all attempted college coursework. For complete transfer admission information and deadlines, please visit https://admissions.appstate.edu/apply/transfer-student

*Students with less than a 2.25 will be reviewed holistically. Please speak to your transfer admissions counselor or call the Transfer Admissions & Engagement office with questions.

Foundations of American Democracy (FAD):

  • FAD is a graduation requirement for all students entering any UNC institution on or after July 1, 2025, who are seeking a baccalaureate degree.
  • Waiver: Students transferring to App State with 60+ college credit hours or an AA or AS degree will have the FAD requirement waived.
  • Alternative Courses: If you plan to transfer to App State without meeting any of the above criteria, you can fulfill the FAD requirement by taking one of these courses at a North Carolina Community College: HIS 131, HIS 132, POL 120, or SOC 220

Early College: Early college students are considered First Year students (not Transfers) and should apply using the Common App.

Additional Information From Appalachian State University:

Studio and Professional Development Electives:

  • A minimum of 39 hours is required from the list of courses on the program of study
  • This must include at least 12 hours in one studio area, which must include at least one course at the 4000 level
  • Students wishing to complete an emphasis area in a specific studio must take at least 18 hours and no more than 24 hours in that studio area
  • At least 3 hours must come from: ART 3013, 3105, 3112, 3520, 3521, 3522, 3850, 3900, 4012, 4013, or 4900, or ENT 3060

BFA Degree Information

  • Students majoring in Studio Art will be required to complete a portfolio review. All declared BFA majors must pass the portfolio candidacy review before enrolling in any 3000 level course within the major.
  • Portfolio Content: 10 images of the applicant's best work, a 500 word essay, and appropriate documentation of art
