The BFA in Theater: Musical Theatre is competitive and requires an application to be admitted to the program. Because of the requirements, please plan for more time at WCU.

Admission to the University does not guarantee admission in to the School of Stage and Screen.

“All the world is a stage” and at WCU we’ll prepare you—the singer, dancer, and actor—to step onto the professional stage of musical theatre. From world-class faculty to cutting-edge facilities to a rigorous curriculum, we’ll provide you with a strong foundation in the performance and technical aspects of musical theatre and equip you with the tools you need for a professional career or graduate study. Entrance into the BFA in Theatre - Musical Theatre is competitive and is by admission/interview only.

For acceptance into the BFA program in Acting for Stage and Screen, Musical Theatre, or Entertainment Design, and Technology, students must be extended an invitation into the program after a live audition or interview process. Students are then evaluated artistically and academically each year through the Program Continuation Policy.

A minimum GPA of 2.50 is required for graduation with the BFA degree.

Admission requirements include the standard undergraduate admissions process for the University as well as a live audition or interview through the School of Stage and Screen.

Note: Entrance into each program in the School of Stage and Screen in competitive. Please refer to the school’s website for details on the admission process and live audition requirements for individual programs.

This degree is for the performance student with the addition of voice, dance, and musical components.

Apply to the School. Complete the application form.  This application is only for the school, not for WCU, you must apply to Western Carolina University separately.

• 2 letter of reference concerning your prospect for professional study.
• A head shot (or recent photo).
• Resume.
• A short Essay on why you are interested in the Musical Theatre program with the School of Stage & Screen (1-2 pages).
• Two contrasting 32 bar cuts (approximately 1 minute each) of selections pulled from the musical theatre spectrum.
• 1 minute monologue
• Dance Call Video (required for zoom and live auditions)

Dance for Live at WCU Auditions: All candidates must participate in a dance class (warm-up and several combinations). Applicants must wear standard rehearsal attire or clothing and shoes that allow for ease of movement. Sandals and tennis shoes are not considered proper attire. Jazz shoes/booties are suggested, however, other dance shoes are allowed. Tap shoes are not necessary for the audition.
