Architecture Program Overview

The undergraduate Bachelor of Arts in Architecture (B.A. in Architecture) requires a minimum of 120 credit hours. The Program offers three concentrations, one of which must be declared/completed to earn this degree. Students work with their advisor to declare a concentration during the spring semester of their second year in the program. Students who wish to become registered architects must also earn their professional degree, the Master of Architecture (M.Arch), from a program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). All three concentrations may lead to professional licensure, and pathways to that goal vary depending on performance and the specific concentration earned in this degree.

General Admissions Information

The David R. Ravin School of Architecture (SoA) reviews applicants only after they have been accepted by UNC Charlotte and have completed all requirements of the Secondary Application to the SoA. Applicants denied by the University will not be reviewed.

• Applicants accepted by the University will be designated as “Pre-Architecture” students until the SoA renders its decision: Applicants accepted into the Architecture program will be designated as “Architecture” majors and be assigned to an advisor in Architecture.
• Applicants denied entry into the Architecture program will be designated as undeclared majors and be assigned to an advisor in University College.

Applicants admitted to UNC Charlotte but denied by the SoA may enroll in the University in a different major and reapply for the architecture program through the Change-of-Major process for a future fall term.

Placement for Transfer Applicants

Applications are evaluated for placement in first-year Architecture courses, regardless of an applicant’s overall credit standing in the University, and initial offers of admission are for first-year placement.

Transfer applicants who have earned substantial credit hours in architectural courses at another institution, and/or who have significant professional experience in the field, may be considered for advanced placement into second-year or third-year Architecture courses after they have been admitted to the program.

Students seeking to apply architecture coursework taken at other institutions toward the Architecture major must provide official course descriptions, syllabi, and a portfolio of completed work for consideration. Those materials may be forwarded to soa-admissions@charlotte.edu, and they will be reviewed following the admissions process (students will be accepted into the program as first-years, and may negotiate advanced placement only after they have been admitted to both UNC Charlotte and the SoA).

Concentration Courses	12-39	Concentration courses will vary depending on the concentration. To view options and a detailed breakdown of courses, please visit the Academic Catalog. Students can work with their assigned architecture advisor to discuss concentrations to determine which best aligns with their goals and interests. Students formally declare a concentration during the spring semester of their second year in the program. Concentration-specific coursework typically starts during the fall semester of their third year in the program. Architectural Studies Concentration Restricted Elective courses (6 credits maximum per discipline for a total 12 credits) Pre-Professional Concentration Pre-Professional Concentration courses (18 credits) Practice Concentration* Practice Concentration courses (36 credits) Additional elective based in Architecture: ARCH 4050, ARCH 4060, or ARCH 4070 *Students in the Practice Concentration: Students intending to enroll in UNC Charlotte's twelve-month M.Arch. Advanced Standing Curriculum must earn, in addition to all of the requirements of this concentration, 128 credit-hours in total during their undergraduate studies in order to be eligible for that graduate program. Although the B.A. in Architecture degree requires only 120 credits, the SoA's M.Arch. Admissions Committee will review transcripts to ensure that all applicants admitted to the Advanced Standing Curriculum have earned 128 credit-hours prior to the start of their enrollment in the program.
