Program Admission Notes:

This major requires specific App State classes which are not offered at the community college. For this major, it is recommended that students transfer after 30 UGETC hours.

Foundations of American Democracy (FAD):

  • FAD is a graduation requirement for all students entering any UNC institution on or after July 1, 2025, who are seeking a baccalaureate degree.
  • Waiver: Students transferring to App State with 60+ college credit hours or an AA or AS degree will have the FAD requirement waived.
  • Alternative Courses: If you plan to transfer to App State without meeting any of the above criteria, you can fulfill the FAD requirement by taking one of these courses at a North Carolina Community College: HIS 131, HIS 132, POL 120, or SOC 220.

Early College: Early college students are considered First Year students (not Transfers) and should apply using the Common App.

College Level Foreign Language Requirements:

Students are required to demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency in a language other than English. Intermediate-level proficiency is demonstrated by successful completion of a 4th-semester language course.

Additional Information From Appalachian State University:

Foreign languages taken at the community college MUST BE either Chinese or Japanese I & II

A minor is required for this degree.

LLC East Asian Languages and Cultures majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad for at least a semester in a study abroad program or international internship relevant to their program of study and approved prior to departure by the advisor.

Target Language Electives 12

Choose 12 hours of Chinese (CHN) OR Japanese (JPN) electives at the 1040 level or above for a total of 30 hours under the Major Requirements. At least 3 hours must be at the 3000 level or above. Credit hours from study abroad may be used, as appropriate. One course in the Target Language Electives may be met with a course taught in another East Asian language (languages not offered at Appalachian e.g., Korean) with the permission of the major advisor and the department chair, and two beginning level (i.e., 1000 level) language courses in other East Asian languages can be used to fulfill one of these upper-level elective courses.

CHN 1040 and CHN 1050 may count as Chinese major electives.

JPN 1040 and JPN 1050, or JPN 1060 may count as Japanese major electives.

Culture Area Electives 6

Students choose electives related to their major from the list on the program of study or from other related courses with approval of the advisor. At least 3 hours of these courses should be at the 3000 level.

Minor Courses 12-21

Minimum of 9 semester hours of courses taken to fulfill minor requirements must be courses offered by Appalachian. Students may double count no more than six (6) hours between the minor and the major. Students may not minor in their target language.
