Transfer Guide for Associate in Arts

2026-2027

Delivery Method: On-Campus

Program Admission Notes:

Due to class sequencing for this major, students need to begin coursework at App State in the summer, unless the student has significant, previous design coursework and completes a Transfer Portfolio Review with the program director, where the director will place the student at the appropriate level. This major requires specific App State classes which are not offered at the community college. For this major, it is recommended that students transfer no later than after earning 30 UGETC hours.

To see information about transfer students in Interior Design see information on undergraduate bulletin under section "D"

Applicants should have a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.25 in all attempted college coursework. For complete transfer admission information and deadlines, please visit https://admissions.appstate.edu/apply/transfer-student

*Students with less than a 2.25 will be reviewed holistically. Please speak to your transfer admissions counselor or call the Transfer Admissions & Engagement office with questions.

Foundations of American Democracy (FAD):

  • FAD is a graduation requirement for all students entering any UNC institution on or after July 1, 2025, who are seeking a baccalaureate degree.
  • Waiver: Students transferring to App State with 60+ college credit hours or an AA or AS degree will have the FAD requirement waived.
  • Alternative Courses: If you plan to transfer to App State without meeting any of the above criteria, you can fulfill the FAD requirement by taking one of these courses at a North Carolina Community College: HIS 131, HIS 132, POL 120, or SOC 220.

Early College: Early college students are considered First Year students (not Transfers) and should apply using the Common App.

Additional Information From Appalachian State University:

  • Students transferring into the Interior Design major should apply for the first summer session and plan to take two Foundations classes each session, and complete the Freshman Portfolio Review at the end of that summer. (Unless the student has significant, previous design coursework and completes a Transfer Portfolio Review with the program director, where the director will place the student at the appropriate level.) Failure to begin in the summer will result in the student having a four year sequence of courses in the program, versus three after completing the Freshman Portfolio Review.
  • A portfolio is not required for admission to the program; rather the student is required to complete the Freshman Portfolio Review at the end of the accelerated summer session foundation. Students who complete the accelerated summer session, and pass the portfolio review, can expect three years to complete the degree.
  • Students who transfer in the fall can expect 4 years to complete the degree.
  • Completing the AA degree will result in students taking courses that will not benefit them in the major and extend time to graduation.
  • To be considered for transfer credit for any INT course a portfolio of all work must be submitted for a Transfer Portfolio Review and received prior to Reading Day of the Fall or Spring semester prior to entering Appalachian State University. If the Transfer Portfolio Review does not assess completion of all Foundation courses, the student would still need to complete the Freshman Portfolio Review at the end of the completion of all Foundation courses.
  • Minimum grade C/2.0 required in each major course
